An Overnight Stop - One Shot Adventure - Pathfinder Second Edition Compatible
Welcome to An Overnight Stop, a one-shot Adventure compatible with Pathfinder Second Edition. I created this during a live stream on June 25, 2023 at the Classic_DM You Tube channel where we rolled a random number to find a single monster from the Pathfinder Bestiaries 1, 2, or 3. Did you know there are 923 pages of monsters across all three books? From there, our goal was to design a simple one-shot that you can slip into your game, but I wanted the theme to anchor on the monster itself.
Bauble Beast
We landed on page 28 of Bestiary 3 – the Bauble Beast. Unlike many of the horrific monstrosities found in Pathfinder, this four-legged + two-armed snuffle head was interesting to design for taking into consideration his ability to create magical jewelry literal through his digestive system. His key form of trickery relies on a suggestion spell from a forged jewelry he makes, fooling a player to become obsessive about it and delivering the Bauble Beast real jewelry! See the stat block and details on the Bauble Beast on the subsequent page along with the hyperlink to his entry at Archives of Nethys.
Tower Ruins
For the location, we quickly sketched up the ruins of a tower set in the wilderness. The idea here is it makes a great place for the players to camp when travelling overland, perhaps returning from an adventure after the players looted valuable jewelry on their adventures that they may want to sell once back at a major settlement, town, or city. We thought a crumbled and ruined stone tower would make a great shelter for camp, so that’s what we loosely sketched up.
Running the Adventure
During the design session, we thought it would be ideal if the Bauble Beast snuck into the players’ camp at night, perhaps when only one of the players is standing guard and slips his enchanted forgery into the player’s treasure trove. The following morning, one of the players discovers the treasure and falls under its spell. Here is where it gets interesting.
“Anyone who dons the imitation jewelry is targeted with a DC 24 suggestion spell with a duration of 1 hour on a failure or 24 hours on a critical failure. A creature that fails learns the location where the fake jewelry was created and is compelled to collect their valuable belongings and bring them to that location.” Source: Archives of Nethys
